My thoughts on Pocoyo's Circus

When I first heard of Pocoyo, I was unsure how my little ones would feel about him.  My hesitations were unwarranted though as my boys (ages 1 and 5 years) love Pocoyo, particularly this DVD, and my girls (ages 7, 11, and 12 years) have a hard time leaving the room when it is on. 

Our favorite story was New on the Planet, and really it holds a good life lesson as well.  It tells the story of an alien that arrives on Earth and is scared of every creature he meets, until he realizes they are also afraid of him. 

The colors are bright, the characters are endearing, and there are no annoying repetitive songs or phrases that get under your skin after hearing them repeatedly.  The stories are sweet and the DVD kept my kids giggling away.

About Dance Academy

Season 1: Volume 1 (from the back of the DVD case)- Ever since she was a little girl, Tara Webster dreamed of becoming a dancer.  In Season 1: Volume 1, country girl Tara leaves her home, family and friends to audition for the prestigious National Academy of Dance in the big city.  When she's given a spot she's sure her life will be spectacular, but what she doesn't realize is that there's a whole lot more to surviving the Academy than just dancing.

Tara soon meets the other first years: carefree Kat, gorgeous Ethan, rebellious Christian, loveable Sammy and overachiever Abigail.  Together they manage the pressures of exams, crushes and dancing, all the while knowing that at the end of the year not everyone makes the cut.

My thoughts on Dance Academy

Thanks to Netflix, my girls have fallen in love with Australian teen dramas, so when I had the opportunity to review the DVDs of season 1, volumes 1 and 2, of Dance Academy, I was excited to do so. The fact that they are about dancing, particularly ballet and some hip hop, was especially intriguing as my girls love to learn about dancing.  My older girls (ages 12 and almost 11) really love this show for all that it is, while my 6 year old is really just interested in the dance scenes and could care less about the "drama" parts.  I like that the characters are diverse both culturally and personality-wise.  I also like how it shows how Tara learns not only the commitment and dedication required to follow ones dreams, but she learns how to navigate teen relationships with both males and other females.  There is some minor violence and mean-girl behavior, along with some references to sex, but otherwise it is a pretty tame show. 

I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys good-natured teen dramas and/or tv shows about dance.

About Sid the Science Kid: The Movie

Sid and his classmate Gabriela enter a contest and win the exclusive  opportunity to visit a new modern science museum before it opens to the public.  There the kids meet a quirky scientist, voiced by special guest star Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), who has designed robot tour guides of the future!

Then one of the robots goes haywire and the grand opening is in jeopardy! It is up to Sid and his friends to work as a team to find the rogue robot and save the day!

My thoughts on Sid the Science Kid: The Movie

As a homeschooler, I found this DVD to be great for introducing my kids to several different topics.  Academically, there is basic information on astronomy, weather, dinosaurs, bees, simple machines and probability.  Additional topics in the DVD include robots, teamwork, problem solving and learning to be humble.  As a bonus, your child will learn several cute jokes and will have fun solving the riddles throughout the DVD. 

My older kids, ages 10 and 12, did not plan to watch the DVD with me and the younger ones, because they typically find the tv show to be too "young"  for them.  However, when Sid and Gabriela win the trip to the museum, there are two older kids who also win. As they move through the various areas of the museum, each pair of kids share what they know about that topic.  This elevated my older girls' interest and they actually sat and watched the whole thing.  We all found the DVD to be informative and funny at many parts.

I recommend Sid the Science Kid: The Movie to anyone who knows a child that enjoys Sid the Science Kid, or just science in general.  I would recommend it for ages 4-10.
