We Did It Wednesday: Horchata (and review of the Best Nut Milk Bag)

I first tasted horchata a few years ago on a road trip.  I absolutely fell in love with the creamy, sweet, cinnamony flavor and knew I wanted to try making it at home.  I put on my want list, a fine mesh bag or sieve and then never bought one.  Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I received the opportunity to review the Best Nut Milk Bag Now, I had no reason to not try and replicate this yummy treat.  Before I get to the recipe, let me tell you a bit more about the Best Nut Milk Bag .  This bag is great for exactly what its' name implies, making nut milks, and so much more.  On my personal list of things to try in the future are almond milk, Greek yogurt, and Elderberry Syrup, but it can be used for any recipe that requires you to run the ingredients through a fine sieve.  Here are some of the features of the bag:

I really like this bag and plan to use it many, many more times.  The chopped rice and cinnamon sticks that I used this with had many sharp edges and likely would have shredded cheesecloth, but the bag held up well.  It is easy to wash, and easy to dry.  I suspect it will last for quite a while and through many, many uses.  I also love that I can easily keep the pulp that I strained for other uses.  For example, I am going to use the rice and cinnamon from the horchata to grind into rice flour for snickerdoodle cookies.  Overall, I would highly recommend this bag.

Now for the recipe:

Ingredients
- 1 cup uncooked white rice
- 4 cups of water
- 1/2 cup milk (the more fat, the creamier it will be)
- 1 1/2 cups light cream
- 1/2 Tbsp pure vanilla extract
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/3 cup white sugar

Instructions
1) Put the rice, water and cinnamon sticks into a blender and blend for about 1 minute, making sure the rice and cinnamon break apart somewhat.

2) Refrigerate mixture overnight, or at least 6 hours.

3) Strain the water mixture through a fine mesh sieve or The Best Nut Milk Bag, into a pitcher.  Set aside the rice and cinnamon for another use or discard it.

4) Stir in the milk, cream, vanilla and sugar.

5) Chill for 1 hour.

6) Stir.  Serve over ice.

My thoughts on Nuby Easy Clean Bibs

After having 5 kids, I have some pretty solid opinions on the different bibs we have used.  The Nuby Easy Clean Bibs rank right up at the top for our favorite bibs.  They provide good coverage on the baby's front (though I wish more bibs actually came with sleeves as well,) and the crumb pocket actually does catch crumbs.  A word of caution though, some of my babies, including Sam, have been known to stash food in the crumb pocket on purpose, so be sure to check it when you take the bib off, or at the very least before washing it.  I also really like how easy it is to clean the bib as well.  You simply wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild soap and hang it to dry, which happens rather quickly.  I do wish the instructions said it was washing machine safe, but they do say not to wash them in the washing machine.  Admittedly,  I did not read the directions until after I had already washed it in the washing machine once (I did line dry it though) and I have to say it held up just fine.  The material on the front is soft and has vibrant colors.  The back of the bib keeps your baby dry and is made with 100% phthalate-free PVC material, as is the pocket on the front.

This makes a great feeding bib for babies and toddlers.  If you are looking for a basic bib to keep your babies clothes clean and dry, I highly recommend the Nuby Easy Clean Bibs.

My thoughts on Project Passport: The Middle Ages

When I decided to review this product, I originally wanted it for my 6th and 7th grade students, but even my 1st grader and kindergartner are enjoying many of the activities.  When I am choosing items to purchase for our homeschool activities, I particularly like those that are cross-curricular.  The beauty of this CD is that it covers social studies and history, as well as writing, art, and even home economics.  I also like that the CD works on both PC and Mac computers, since we are considering transitioning to a Mac in the future.  My kids are retaining the information they are learning as well, which is always a plus. 

On a side note, Project Passport: The Middle Ages, is brought to you by Homeschool in the Woods.  Although I have been a fan of Homeschool in the Woods for several years, when my CD arrived, I was excited to see that they are a local (to me) company.  Although it has no bearing on my opinion of the product, it is nice to know that it is a local business.

My thoughts on Suddenly Salad

I am not one to use packaged products without doctoring them up at least a little.  Having said that, in a pinch, I have used Suddenly Salad without adding anything to it.  I had time and ingredients on hand though to use the boxes I received in recipes.  With the Classic Suddenly Salad, we tried the Red, White and Blueberry Pasta Salad from the Suddenly Salad website.  I was unsure how I would feel about blueberries with pasta and feta, but it was pretty yummy and something I would make again.  With the Ranch and Bacon variety, we chose to add some roasted chicken, halved grape tomatoes, a little chopped cucumber and some additional, freshly cooked bacon.  The real bacon really helped elevate the salad and the other ingredients added to the flavor to make it taste more like a from scratch recipe.

My thoughts on Hershey's Cookies N' Creme Cereal

One thing I have been missing since giving up high fructose corn syrup, is chocolate sandwich cookies and cookies and cream flavored treats.  They are one of my favorites, but most of them are made with high fructose corn syrup and therefore when they are used as an ingredient, that "flavor" of other foods is often out as well.  I was very happy to see that this cereal does not contain high fructose corn syrup and appeased my craving for cookies and cream.  I am one of those moms that rarely buys kid-friendly cereals and when I do, we usually eat them as a dessert, rather than a breakfast, and that is how we ate this cereal as well.  We all enjoyed it.  It is sweet, but not cloying and when eaten without milk, still has a slight milk flavor. The discs also stay fairly crisp when in milk, or at least did not get gross and soggy within a short period of time.

My thoughts on the Nuby iMonster No-Spill Cup

 This cup matches perfectly with the Nuby iMonster Snack Keeper that I reviewed several weeks ago.  This would make for a cute gift set for most little ones, but my Sam, he refuses to drink out of a sippy cup, so I was not sure how this would work for us.  We did not discover this until a few weeks ago, as he had been nursing for almost all of his fluids.  As we were weaning him, I tried a few different things to get fluids in him, and eventually realized that the only way he will drink is from a regular cup (with assistance of course) and through a straw.  He also likes sippy cups that he doesn't have to work to get the fluid out, so most no-spill sippy cups do not work for us.  The iMonster No-Spill Cup is different though because he can easily get the fluid out, as it only takes a little bit of pressure to get the no-spill valve to open.  Speaking of the valve, I appreciate that the valve does not come apart from the lid.  With my other kids, I had a collection of lids and valves that were always separate from each other.  The colors are bright and fun and have not faded through several washings.  It fits perfectly in his little hands making it easy for him to self-feed.

I recommend this for any child who enjoys monsters and is ready for a sippy cup, even if they seem to dislike most sippy cups.

My thoughts on Nuby Tickle Toes Frog

You know when you hear a child laugh a laugh that is just so cute, it cracks you up?  That is exactly what sound the Tickle Toes animals make. My 5 year son received the Tickle Toes Alligator as a gift a few years ago and I loved it then, so when I had the opportunity to choose one for Sam, I was excited he could have one of his own.  Sam enjoys cuddling the frog and just loves it when it laughs.  The picture above was taken as my daughter was trying to teach him how to climb the stairs, using the Tickle Toes Frog as his motivation.

I recommend this for all young children.  Having said that, if you have a child that likes to push your buttons by repeatedly making their toys make noise, you may want to hold off.  My kids did not do that with this, but I had a child visiting that did squeeze it repeatedly and after about 10 minutes of hearing it, I had to put it up.  It is fun the first few times, but can wear on you after a bit.  On the plus side, the noise maker held up great to the repeated squeezing and still works wonderfully.

With 5 kids, I have been through my share of stools.  I wish I had found this one earlier on though, as I believe it might just have lasted through all of them.  It is super light weight, yet very sturdy.  I love that it can hold up to 800 pounds, too.  We generally keep it in our bathroom for our 5 year old to use for brushing his teeth and for when our 1 year old starts using the potty, but we have also brought it into the kitchen and over to the linen closet, when we needed to reach things on a higher shelf.  I also think my mother-in-law will be thrilled to use it when she visits us next.  She is 7 inches shorter than I am and often has trouble reaching things in my kitchen that I take for granted.  Up until now, she just asked someone else to get it, but often commented how she needed a step stool.  I also really like the large non-slip area (the green part on the top) on the top and along each of the four feet.  The quality of this stool far outweighs all the others I have had in the past.

I recommend to this both parents of little ones and to anyone who ever needs just a little boost.  Since it holds up to 800 pounds, this would work for just about anybody.

My thoughts on Snails (Safe Nail Polish)

I love that this is such a simple formula and free of nasty toxins.  My concern was that it might take several coats to get vibrant color, but it did not.  Another issue I have found in the past with nail polish is that they do not always look to be the same color on the nails as they do in the bottle.  With just one coat, my daughter's nails were brightly colored, and true to the color in the bottle.  I also painted my own nails, just so I would know for sure what exactly the polished nails were subjected to throughout the day.  I went about my regular daily activities and the polish held up very well.  I do wear gloves though when I am washing dishes, which if I had not, I think it may have washed the polish off.  Regular hand washing did not affect the polish though.  I had planned to wash the polish off so I could report how easy or difficult it was, but I forgot to do it before I took my shower the following morning.  When I realized what I had done, I looked down at my nails to see how much of the polish was remaining and was shocked to see that my nails were completely free of the polish.  I am guessing that means, it is fairly easy to wash the polish off when you are ready to.  

I recommend Snails for any child who enjoys having their nails painted.  This formula is safe so that even the littlest children can wear it.  I also recommend it for adults who want to avoid the chemicals in traditional polishes and who like to be able to easily change their polish.  However, if you like to polish you nails and keep them polished for more than a day or two, I would say to try a different polish, or wear gloves in the shower.

Product Review: Oscillococcinum

About Oscillococcinum

Oscillococcinum temporarily relieves flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, headache, body aches, chills and fever.  The active ingredient is anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum 200CK HPUS (The HPUS indicates that the active ingredient is officially included in the Homeopathic Pharmacopcoeia of the United States.) The inactive ingredients are lactose and sucrose.  The product comes in small tubes, with each tube holding one dose.  To use, adults and children ages 2 years and older, dissolve contents from one entire tube in the mouth, every 6 hours, up to 3 times a day.  Oscillococcinum works best when taken at the first sign of flu-like symptoms.  Clinical studies have shown Oscillococcinum to help reduce both the duration and severity of flu-like symptoms.  There are no side effects, such as drowsiness; no risk of overdose, and no drug interactions.  While it is safe for everyone over age 2, there is also a child's version available.  The sweet-tasting pellets melt away easily with no water, chewing or swallowing necessary.

As a precaution- stop using and contact a doctor, if your symptoms last longer than 3 days or worsen.  Also, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before using.  As with all health products, keep out of reach of children.

My thoughts on Oscillococcinum

I recently had a pretty severe head cold, with some flu-like symptoms, but no fever.  I decided it was as good a time as ever to see how well Oscillococcinum would work.  Although I love the idea of homeopathic medications, I approach each one skeptically.  I have yet to find one that has not worked as promised.  The same goes for Oscillococcinum.  My headache and minor body aches cleared up pretty quickly, even quicker than with traditional medications.  I did not feel over medicated or groggy.  I found the pellets to be almost a treat to take.  They really do melt quickly and taste slightly sweet, with no funky flavor or aftertaste.  I also like the cute little vials, but wish I could I figure out a cute craft or something to make with them.

I recommend Oscillococcinum to anyone who is interested in using homeopathic treatments for cold and flu-like symptoms.

My thoughts on Nuby Bath Time and Thermometer 

I love the whimsical look of both the turtle and the duck versions of this product.  They are very cute and Sam loved interacting with it.  I like that it has a thermometer that will check the water for you and flash red if the water is too hot and green if it is too cold.  The timer ensures that baby is not in the water for too long, and can count up or down.  I like that it can double for the older kids and adults to ensure they keep their own baths and showers to a reasonable time limit.  I do need to note that you will want to keep the packaging when you first buy it, as the instructions are on the back and you will want them, especially if your thermometer arrives showing the temperature in Fahrenheit and you use Celsius, or vice-versa.   The toy is also safe for the baby to play with it once they are in the tub.

I recommend this for anyone who regularly bathes a baby or young child.

My thoughts on VM Audio Headphones

It took me a long time to even bother with using ear buds.  I would just wait to listen to things until I was alone.  I finally succumbed and bought some, and they were okay, but I still avoided using them unless I really had to.  The reason I avoided them was that I really dislike sticking something inside my ear and I was really concerned that regular headphones just would not be a decent enough quality for my budget.  Then, I received these to try out and I am so happy to say that they are WONDERFUL!!  Not only are they extremely comfortable to wear, most of the time, but they are adjustable so my 4-year old can use them when he needs to.  The only time I found them not to be comfortable, and when I ended up using my ear buds, was when I was trying to fall asleep listening to something on my iPod, and I was not expecting them to work for that purpose anyway.  Speaking of letting my 4-year old use them, I also find them to be very durable.  The soft ear cushion has a soft leather-like cover that is securely attached and the ear pieces move pretty easily.  I did find that it can sometimes take a try or two to figure out how to get the ear pieces back to the correct position for listening, but as long as you don't try to force it to go a way it is not supposed to go, they move easily.  My favorite part about the durability is that the wires are covered with a braided cord which allows it move freely without exposing the wires.  As for sound quality, these blow all the ear buds I have tried out of the water.  The sound is clear and true and outside noises are drowned out as well.

I recommend the VM Audio Headphones to anyone who wants a great headphone at a reasonable price.  They may not work for sleeping, but for every other way I use them, these are perfect.   for those who may want a different color, they are also available in red, pink, grey, orange, green and lime.

My thoughts on Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath and Kitchen Cleanser

I have loved Soft Scrub since I was cleaning the sink and bathtub at my parents' home when I was a teenager.  It really made removing soap scum incredibly easy.  The down side back then was that it was tough to get it completely rinsed off and even when I thought it was completely rinsed, after it dried, I could see what I missed. 

Along comes this new formula and I have to say, I am very happy with it.  After we moved in to our home, we had to replace something on the cold water handle of our bathroom sink.  While the handle was off, the piece that goes around the bottom went missing.  Fast forward 2 years and we have yet to replace it and now the sink has rust stains.  When I read that Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath and Kitchen Cleanser had improved whitening power, I decided to try it on the rust stains first.  No other cleaner has really been able to do much to lessen them, so while the results are not 100%, Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath and Kitchen Cleanser did lessen the rust.

I also enjoyed the lemon scent that the cleanser had.  The downside of Soft Scrub Total All Purpose Bath and Kitchen Cleanser is the new bottle.  I found it was too easy for an excessive amount of product to come out, which caused a TON of suds, so while the cleanser rinsed away easily, I had to wait for all the suds to dissipate.  Of course, if you just use a small amount (and that will go a long way), you will not have to worry about all the excess suds.

My thoughts on the Nuby Look At Me Mirror Toy 

Sam is really enjoying his new toy.  He recently cut his first two teeth at the same time and he loved chewing on the different parts of the teether.   I like that he can easily grasp the toy by putting his thumbs in two of the "loops" and that it has so many different things to keep his attention in such a small toy.   In addition to chewing on the toy, he is enjoying cooing and babbling to the handsome little guy he sees in the mirror.

I recommend this for any teething baby and any baby who enjoys seeing themselves in the mirror.

My thoughts on Nuby SoundBite 

Do you remember pretending that the spoon was a car, or airplane, or train getting ready to drive into a tunnel as you moved it towards the baby's mouth?  This is the same idea, but these come complete with a small replica of the vehicle and makes the matching sounds.  I got to try the red and blue race car with Sam and he seemed to enjoy it. These are also available in a pink and purple VW Bug-like car, a green and blue train and a green and yellow airplane. I also like that he can easily handle the spoon himself, so when he is ready to fully feed himself, he can still use these spoons.  In fact, my 4-year old always tries to use this spoon when he chooses his own spoon.  It comes as a set of 2 spoons, with 1 sound-making vehicle that easily, but securely, slides onto the spoon when you want to use it.  I simply removed the car when we were ready to wash the spoons and put the spoons in the dishwasher and wiped down the car, if it needed it.  I am not sure how long the sound maker will work and do not see a way to change a battery, but even if the sound eventually goes (it is not showing any signs of going in the near future), you still have 2 high quality spoons and a cute little car that you can then make the noises for.
