Movie Review and Giveaway: Courageous
About the movie
Honor begins at home.
As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer, yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, they quickly discover that their children are beginning to drift further away from them. When tragedy hits home, these men are left with a newfound urgency to renew their faith and reach out to their own children. Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those who are most dear to them?
Features:
Commentary with the Kendrick Brothers
The Making Of Courageous
Deleted Scenes
Outrageous: Outtakes and Bloopers
Courageous In 60 Seconds
The Heart of Courageous
The Story of My Father
My thoughts
There are SO many tv shows, movies, and commercials that portray men as disposable, bumbling idiots. It drives me crazy every time I see one. First, I do not think that most men are like that and second, for those who are, you are not helping the situation by telling them that is how they are perceived. One of my favorite quotes is by Goethe: "Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being." This includes how we allow them to be portrayed in our choices of entertainment. Anyway, I love Courageous for the way the men are portrayed and the the way that fatherhood is shown to be so important. Furthermore, it takes it a step further by encouraging men to be both good husbands and fathers to their own families, but also to step in to fill the role of father for those who do not have one. The humor in the movie is also very funny and clean, which is always appreciated. Each of the men are strong role models, but are imperfect and we see their individual weaknesses at least once, but we also see them work through and deal with several of them. It is rated PG-13 due to the appearance of drugs in the movie, but the drugs are not shown in a positive light. There is also some violence in the form of a police shootout, but it is short and not gory. There is ZERO foul language and no nudity.
My recommendation
I highly recommend this movie to everyone who is a father, a mother (married or single), and anyone who may one day be a parent. This is a Christian movie with references to Christ and the Bible, so if either of those offend you, you will likely not enjoy the movie, but the message is definitely not just for Christians.
About Mommy Bear Media
I received this movie from Mommy Bear Media in exchange for this review and they are offering a gift code to one of my readers to choose a movie of your choice. Mommy Bear Media is a mom-owned business based in Orem, Utah. They only carry the best family friendly movies and TV shows, and only those with a G, PG, or PG-13 rating. These are all original movies from the studios, they have not been edited to make them "clean" for family viewing. They offer free 2-5 day shipping on all orders and if you live near Orem, or will be visiting, you can pick your order up directly from them and receive a 15% discount. I have compared their prices and they are among the lowest I have found on many movies and competitively priced on the rest.

Product Review and giveaway: Seventh Generation Free & Clear Diapers
We recently had the opportunity to try out Seventh Generation's newly relaunched Free & Clear Diapers. In all fairness, we did not get to experience them with anything other than overnight wettings because my son became potty trained during the day in the days before the diapers arrived. However, overnights tend to be one of the times when a good diaper is important and these diapers held up well for us. On top of being a good quality, they are also friendlier to the earth than disposable diapers have been in the past. One of the ways they are gentler on the earth is that they are not whitened with chlorine. You can read about how they do whiten the diapers here: http://bit.ly/TCFProcess This leaves the diaper looking a bit different than you may used to, kind of the same color as butt paste, but not a terrible color. The diapers also are free of pigments so there are no cutesy cartoon characters to be found on them either. You will not find latex, fragrances or petroleum based lotions in the diapers either.
Seventh Generation is also aware that disposable diapers and its packaging do contribute to landfill waste so they are working to reduce that as well. They redesigned their diapers so that the inner core is light weight, but still absorbent. They have also reduced the amount of plastic packaging and their packaging can be recycled in the bins where you bring your plastic store bags to be recycled.
You can find Seventh Generation on facebook and on Twitter.

Wendy's Berry Almond Chicken Salad and giveaway
I was hoping to post more while on the road, but the few nights I actually had time to blog, we were at hotels who either had their wifi down or no wifi in the rooms. I still plan to blog about our trip as we go and I am hoping to have some time to do so in a few days. In the meantime, here is a review of a yummy new salad from Wendy's and a giveaway for a $25 Wendy's gift card.
Shortly before our road trip, I received an invitation to attend a Memorial weekend picnic with some fellow bloggers, sponsored by Wendy's, in order to review their new salad, Berry Almond Chicken Salad. Since the picnic fell during our road trip, I was unable to attend it, but was still given the chance to review this yummy new salad.
About the salad
My family and I enjoyed this salad for lunch on Saturday while we were in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The salad is a mix of romaine and iceberg lettuce, combined with a spring mix. This is topped with fresh, juicy blueberries and huge, sliced strawberries, as well as shaved Asiago cheese and a warm grilled chicken breast. A side of sliced almonds, roasted with sea salt and a package of fat-free raspberry vinaigrette, finish off the salad. This salad is available as a full or half-size, but in order to ensure that only the freshest berries are used in the salad, this salad is only available during the summer. Wendy's other Garden Sensation salads are available year-round.
My thoughts
I tend to dislike fast food restaurants in general, but Wendy's has always been one of my favorites. This is partially due to their healthier options and partially due to the fact that their food is just tasty. Having said that, I am also hesitant to order salads when I am out simply due to the fact that often they are made with an abundance of iceberg lettuce and I prefer other types of lettuce much more. The Berry Almond Chicken Salad is made with some iceberg lettuce, but it was just enough to give it a nice crunch, and still allow the flavors of the other greens come through. I have always enjoyed fruit in my salad, but have never used blueberries. What a mistake! The strawberries were great, but the blueberries added little flavor bursts throughout the salad. Together, the berries almost eliminate the need for any dressing at all, but the fat-free raspberry vinaigrette is perfectly sweet and tangy at the same time. The chicken was warm and tender and the almonds added a salty crunch that was perfect. As for the cheese, I honestly could not really taste it, so I could take or leave that part. I really enjoyed this salad and definitely would order it again. I was also very pleased with the nutrition facts for this salad as well. A full-size salad contains one full serving of fruit and has 450 calories. Plus, berries are a good source of both antioxidants and vitamin C.
The giveaway
I have been given a $25 Wendy's gift card to give away to one of my readers, so that you may try the new Berry Almond Chicken Salad for yourself. Here are the ways you can enter:

I will be receiving a stipend for participating in this review. I also received a gift card to purchase the salad I reviewed and the gift card for the giveaway. Right now, when you purchase specially marked boxes of Big G Cereals, including Honey Nut Cheerios® (17 oz.), Cinnamon Toast Crunch® (17 oz.), Lucky Charms® (16 oz.), Trix® (14.8 oz) and Reese’s Puffs® (18 oz.), you can receive a free Movie Cash certificate (good for 1 admission, up to $12 value.) General Mills and My Blog Spark kindly sent me a gift package which included 4 Movie Cash certificates and 2 boxes of Big G cereals (I got Reese's Puffs and Trix), which included codes that I redeemed for a 5th Movie Cash certificate. My husband and I used 2 tickets to go watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 on IMAX and we used the remaining tickets to take the girls to see Tangled. Giveaways on the web
I have decided to participate in a new (at least to me) program called the MckLinky Giveaway Blog Hop. On weeks like this one, where I am running a giveaway, I will post the Mcklinky at the bottom of the giveaway, and also will put a new post every Friday with the new list. If it is possible, on weeks I do not have a giveaway, I will just post the list on Fridays. The list changes every Friday at 4AM CST, but new contests are added through the week so be sure to come back and check it often. Have fun and please let me know if any of you win any fun prizes.

Admin: my absence and subscribing
First, I would like to explain my absence. It is actually something really stupid, and because it is so stupid, I need to vent about it. Someone, apparently a neighbor, has decided that it is bad parenting to allow my older two children (ages 6 and 7 years) to play outside. They decided to call Child Protective Services and tell them, "Mom and dad allow (daughter #1) and (daughter #2), ages 6 and 7, to play outside, unsupervised, every day for 1-2 hours a day." While, the "charge" is grossly exaggerated, even if it wasn't, I fail to see what is wrong with doing that. They play in the front yard, where I have 3 large windows that I can see out of. We are in a quiet, safe, suburban neighborhood and the yard is fenced on 3 sides. The girls are always appropriately dressed and do not play outside in inclement weather. They are no where near the road and have sustained no injuries, nor gotten into any mischief while playing outside "unsupervised". I am right inside the apartment and can hear everything that is going on. Further more, they have only played outside without an adult, maybe 10 times since we moved in and usually for 30-45 minutes. Fortunately, the case workers who were assigned to us (3 total) saw nothing wrong with the charge and it appears the case is going to be closed as unfounded. However, it threw off my entire weekend. It started Saturday morning when the first case worker showed up. The call was apparently made on Friday, and by NY law, they have to investigate within 24 hours. Well, the 2 girls were at Girl Scout camp and so another worker had to come out because all the kids need to be seen within 24 hours of the first visit. Then yesterday, a "regular" case worker was finally assigned and she had to come out to the apartment as well. It made for quite a stressful weekend that kept us busy cleaning everything (I admit I am no Martha Stewart, plus there are currently 6 of us in a 2 bedroom, and we are getting ready to move next month). Now that it appears to be over, we are getting back to our "normal" life. The irritating part is that even the case workers do not understand why it even had to be investigated. It is not like they said I was leaving the babies outside unsupervised. My children have proven to be responsible and I allow them to play outside during times I cannot because of it. I was told by all three case workers, I could continue to do so. So, to my nosy neighbor: I appreciate that you are concerned for the welfare of my children so let me say some things to you: 1) Fresh air is GOOD for children. 2) Would you rather I let them play inside on video games all day? 3) While my older, responsible children are outside playing, I am inside tending to the needs of the children who NEED me at that moment. 4) If you feel my children are really in danger, let me know your concerns. 5) I hope you never have to go through what you put us through.
Now, on to better things.
On Friday, I realized I had a button for people to subscribe to my blog, but did not realize that I actually had to do something to set it up (I am still fairly new to blogging). I finally fixed the problem and you should be able to subscribe now. So if you tried in the past and it did not work, I apologize. Please try now.
I will be posting the articles I had planned for Saturday-Tuesday over the next few days, but in an effort to not fall further behind, I am going to start with today's post and then go from there. Also, keep an eye out for a giveaway I will be doing within the next few days.
